3 tractor trailers crash on I-77 in Chester Co.

CHESTER COUNTY, SC (WBTV) - Three tractor trailers wrecked on Interstate 77 in Chester County early Wednesday morning.

The wreck happened near the Chester and York County line.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, three tractor trailers crashed in the northbound lanes near mile marker 67.

The highway patrol says one of the big rigs was trying to merge onto the interstate from an emergency lane when it was hit by a second truck. The third truck then plowed into the other two.

One lane was closed for about two hours while crews worked to remove the debris from the interstate.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, electronic signs on state Highway 160 near Fort Mill that usually warn of traffic construction or wrecks had a very different message early Sunday morning.

Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Billy Elder says someone apparently tampered with the signs sometime before 4 a.m. Sunday.

Gas prices to increase a dime a day, gas station owner says

ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) - Despite popular belief, gas prices in South Carolina are not immune to the pain at the pump.

The average gas price in the Rock Hill area is $3.15 per gallon and increasing daily. In fact, one local gas station owner told WBTV he expects to see prices increase as much as a dime a day.

When we caught up with driver Julie Dunn, she was getting a good deal on gas Thursday morning.

"By the skin of my teeth,“ said Dunn. “When I walked in, I heard him say that he was getting ready to go up on his gas. I wanted to make sure I got it for $3.09 instead of $3.18.”

Owner of the Exxon Quick C on Anderson Road, Eshu Patel says he gets the new gas prices from Exxon the night before and he changes them in the morning. Since Tuesday, Patel told WBTV that the price has jumped from $2.98 per gallon to Thursday’s new price of $3.18

4-day snow event costs DOT at least $2.7 million

SOUTH CAROLINA (AP) - The four-day ice and snow storm that whipped through South Carolina this month dented the state's transportation budget to the tune of at least $2.7 million and will pull money from the fund used to fix roads and bridges.

Department of Transportation spokesman Pete Poore said last week the figure is just the starting point, because many costs have yet to be tallied. He said coming days will bring the final tally.

The $2.7 million cost includes $1.2 million for labor, $1.1 million for salt and sand and $388,000 for fuel, parts and equipment used in the operation.

"And the meter's still running," said Poore.
