Gas prices falling, despite spring travel demand

Gas prices falling, despite spring travel demand

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- If you have filled up at the pump lately, you've probably noticed there's not as much sticker shock. Gas prices have actually been going down.

This despite spring travel demand when prices usually rise.

But Tanda Misenheimer of Charlotte finds it hard to believe gas prices have been steadily dropping over the past couple of months.

"Well they see the difference, we don't," she said.

Even with the drop in prices, Tanda says it's still tough on her household budget.

"You can't go put five dollars like you used to in my day and get a half a tank of gas,"she said. "You can't do that now. You're putting $20 and $30 in now just to get a half a tank of gas."

But prices have been falling steadily after peaking at $3.80 a gallon in February. They are down 24 cents since then, an unusual trend says Angela Daley with AAA Carolinas.

Four churches robbed during Sunday service, woman arrested

YORK COUNTY, SC (WBTV)- A Rock Hill woman was arrested on larceny and drug charges after she stole from people attending services at four different churches in one day, according to the York County Sheriff's Office.

The incidents happened on Sunday, April 7, at United Pentecostal Church on Firetower Road, Southside Baptist Church and Harvest Ministries Church, both on Anderson Road, and Neely's Creek ARP Church.

Deputies were dispatched to all four churches within several hours of each other, and all witnesses had a similar story – a young white female, wearing a pink top and blue jeans had walked in during Sunday services, acting suspicious.

Allergy season starting right on schedule, are you ready?

Allergy season starting right on schedule, are you ready?

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Allergies. It can be a dirty word when pollen levels spike, and it's something the Southeast is notorious for. Trees are blooming and many of us are sneezing. It happens every year, and every year we say it: This is the worst allergy season ever. I asked a local physician how this year stacks up and it turns out it's a pretty typical allergy season.

"Allergies are an abnormal immune response to harmless substances, like pollen or animal dander," says Dr. Joseph T. Inglefield, III with the Hickory Allergy and Asthma Clinic. "Allergies are really an overreaction to something the body sees as foreign and dangerous, turning on the arm of the immune system that fights off parasites."

Spring maintenance tips to keep mower running all summer

Spring maintenance tips to keep mower running all summer

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- As the days get warmer and longer, lawn care is quickly again becoming part of the weekly routine.

But you don't want to waste your weekend trying to get the mower to start.

That's why your lawn equipment should ready for the battle.

"The key is to do maintenance," said Barry Deal with James River Equipment.

When spring arrives many homeowners find that their lawn mower won't start or runs poorly.

"That gasoline has been sitting in the mower all winter perhaps haven't started it since November then that can create some problems with the carburetor," said Barry.

"One of the things we recommend here is to always use a stabilizer. A stabilizer will basically keep the gasoline from breaking."

Changing filters on your machine will keep it running well for another summer season without having to take the mower to a repair shop.

Prom Project: Helping every girl find her dream prom dress

Prom Project: Helping every girl find her dream prom dress

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Prom season is just around the corner.

WBTV's Astrid Martinez went by a local shop, and she says there are some breathtaking options there that will guarantee the wearer is the belle of the ball.

"This is the one shoulder silhouette," said Jessica Sigmon a wedding consultant with David's Bridal.

"It works great on everyone and this is more for the girls that don't like a lot of beading and it has all the bright pastel colors that are in this season."

The styles range from totally trendy to completely classic, and they run anywhere from $100 to $300.

But prom is a luxury many families simply can't afford.

"You're talking about thousands of dollars, you invest a lot into prom," said Janine Davis with Girl Talk Foundation.

"It's the hair, it's the nails, it's the makeup, it's the accessories and of course it's the dress."
