Steel fabrication firm picks Lesslie | Business

LESSLIE - Canadian steel firm Supermetal plans to open a plant in an existing building south of Rock Hill and will eventually employ 200 at the site.

The company will launch operations in September with about 40 workers in the former Worthington Steel building in Lesslie.

Supermetal's investment is expected to be less than $5 million, says Mark Farris, director of the York County Economic Development Board.

Supermetal, based in St. Romuald, Quebec, employs 500 at two Canadian plants and a headquarters facility.

The company plans to buy the 160,600-square-foot local building.

"These are good manufacturing jobs," Farris says. "It fills the bill that we need to pay attention to."

Supermetal also qualifies for discounts on property taxes and incentives to train workers, he says. The value of those incentives wasn’t immediately calculated.

Last year, the company celebrated 50 years of operation. Supermetal was founded in 1959 by brothers Gérard and Léonce Bouchard.
